Great Domes in the World

by Nike Miller

Domes are some of the most beautiful architectural creations in the world. Ranging from those that stand tall in the United States to those erected across the globe, many buildings are topped with beautiful domes that shine like beacons. Here is a list of some of the greatest domes in the world that are inspirational to enthusiasts and architects alike.

The United States Capitol Building

Almost nothing is more majestic than the dome that sits atop the building on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington D.C. Home of the President of the United States of America, this historic dome was built in the early 1800s but replaced after the 1850s to account for an expanding population of legislators. This majestic building and the dome that lies atop are among the strongest representations of the American nation as a whole.

Shah Mosque

Persian culture and architecture are highly regarded as some of the most sophisticated and advanced in the world, and the Shah Mosque in Isfahan, Iran, is a perfect example. Built in the 17th century, this beautiful dome was constructed by the Safavid rulers to help create a renaissance in Persian art and architecture. Unlike many other mosques in this tradition, the Shah Mosque is covered in beautifully colored tiles, making this breathtaking dome one of the most incredible in the world.

Dome of the Rock

While it may lie in a heavily contested area, the Dome of the Rock is among the most beautiful structures of its kind. Located in the Old City of Jerusalem, this magnificent dome is one of the greatest accomplishments of Muslim architecture in the world. It was constructed in the 7th century, and to this day it has remained one of the holiest sites in the Muslim religion. Devout followers and tourists come from far and wide to see the beauty and elegance of this centuries-old dome.

Pantheon

Throughout history, it has been common for religious practitioners to create beautiful domes as shrines to their gods or idols. The Pantheon was built in similar tradition as a temple dedicated to all of the Roman gods. Built in the 2nd century, this is one of the oldest and the largest dome in the world built from unreinforced concrete. While Italy is home to boundless architecture, the Pantheon outshines the rest with its stunning beauty.

Hagia Sophia

This marvel of Turkish architecture is located in present-day Istanbul. Originally created as a cathedral for old Constantinople, it was changed to a mosque after the Ottoman invasion of the 15th century. Located in one of the most beautiful regions of the world and overlooking the clear blue Sea of Marmara, the Hagia Sophia is an architectural masterpiece that fits in well in this Asian and European utopia.

Domes Across the World

While domes are among the most architecturally sound structures known to man, they also serve as beautiful additions to buildings across the world. These are some of the most wonderful domes that have made history across the globe.
